Manuel Castillo: The Painting of a Community

Museo Alameda

In August 1993, Manuel “Manny” Castillo, Tony “Cruz” Ortiz, and Juan Ramos founded Inner City Cultural Arts with the help of Rod and Patti Radle and several other community members. These three young men recognized the need for positive expressions of cultural identity through the arts in San Antonio’s West Side, where poverty, gang violence, and limited opportunities had left many young people with few outlets for creative expression. Together, they established a community mural program, and in 1994, Educación, the organization’s first mural, was completed and blessed. In February 1997, the organization received nonprofit status and became San Anto Cultural Arts.

For more than a decade, Castillo served as executive director of San Anto Cultural Arts. The door to the organization’s original building was always open, welcoming countless young artists from the West Side and surrounding neighborhoods. Manny believed that anyone with the desire to better themselves through art and culture should have the opportunity to do so, without question. His love of art, community, music, and culture was expressed through his work, both as executive director and as a professional drummer.

In 2008, Castillo lost his battle with cancer, but his legacy continued through the artists and communities he inspired. Under his leadership, San Anto Cultural Arts developed a mural program that produced dozens of public artworks throughout San Antonio’s West Side. Among the artists responsible for these murals were Cruz Ortiz, Juan Ramos, Adriana Garcia, David Blancas, and Ruth Buentello, whose individual practices developed alongside their contributions to the mural program.

Through the generosity of the Castillo family, Manny’s closest friends, and fellow musicians, the exhibition brings together an extensive collection of personal photographs, archival materials, and ephemera documenting his life as an artist, musician, and community leader. These contributions paint a more intimate portrait of Manny, tracing the relationships, experiences, and creative pursuits that shaped his life beyond San Anto Cultural Arts.

Manny Castillo: The Painting of a Community brings together, for the first time in a single exhibition, the artists responsible for producing San Anto Cultural Arts’ murals, recognizing their individual contributions to a collective project that helped shape the cultural landscape of San Antonio’s West Side.
