Artpace’s Fall 2026 International Artist-in-Residence program presents new work by Texas artist Irene Antonia Diane Reece (Houston), national artist Roksana Pirouzmand (Los Angeles), and international artist Chavis Mármol (Mexico City). Working across photography, sculpture, installation, and performance, the artists examine labor, materiality, and the cultural systems that shape power, identity, and belonging.
In hand-me-downs, Reece honors the Black and Brown women of San Antonio’s garment factories, building a home-like environment from oral histories, family photographs, and personal archives gathered with family, community leaders, and union organizers. Pirouzmand’s hallowed like a shell in water sets the conditions for acid, water, and Texas weather to shape monumental steel paintings, while two rocking chairs, linked to hinged steel plates, send waves across a basin. In Strange Love, Mármol confronts masculine power with humor and skepticism, replacing the body of a mechanical bull with a handmade replica of Little Boy alongside a monumental billboard depicting Cold War space exploration. The cowboy, the astronaut, and the bomb become shared fantasies of conquest.
Together, these exhibitions invite viewers to consider how labor is valued, how materials and environments act upon us, and how images of power are performed.
